Samsung Washer Error Code PC — Clutch Position Error

Advanced Fix 60–120 minutes Tools: Socket wrench set, Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

The PC error code indicates the washer's clutch position sensor is detecting that the clutch is not in the correct position. Samsung top-load washers use a clutch mechanism to switch between agitation and spin modes. If the clutch fails to shift positions, the washer may agitate when it should spin or vice versa. This can be caused by a worn clutch, a faulty position sensor, or a mechanical obstruction.

Alternate codes: PC1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power cycle the washer

Unplug for 5 minutes. If the clutch was temporarily stuck, the reset may allow it to return to the correct position.

Try running a Spin Only cycle after the reset to see if the clutch engages properly.

2

Listen for clutch engagement

Start a wash cycle and listen for the clicking/clunking sound of the clutch shifting between wash and spin positions. If you hear grinding or no engagement sound at all, the clutch mechanism is likely worn.

A healthy clutch shifts smoothly. Grinding or repeated clicking indicates worn clutch pads.

3

Inspect the clutch assembly

Unplug the washer. Access the clutch mechanism beneath the outer tub (you may need to lay the washer on its side or remove the tub). Check for worn pads, broken springs, or a cracked clutch housing.

If the clutch pads are glazed or thin, the clutch cannot grip properly and needs replacement.

4

Check the clutch position sensor

The position sensor (Hall sensor) is mounted near the clutch. Disconnect it and test for proper resistance or voltage output as specified in the tech sheet. A faulty sensor will report the wrong position to the control board.

If the sensor is bad but the clutch is fine, replacing just the sensor is much easier and cheaper.

When to call a professional

Clutch replacement involves significant washer disassembly. If you are not experienced with tub removal, hire a technician.
