Samsung Washer Error Code E4 — Overflow / Too Much Water (Top-Load)

Moderate Fix 20–45 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Towels

What this means

The E4 error code on Samsung top-load washers indicates the water level in the tub has exceeded the maximum safe level. This can be caused by a water inlet valve stuck in the open position, a faulty water level pressure switch that doesn't signal when the tub is full, or using too much detergent causing excessive suds that trick the sensor.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Cancel the cycle and drain

Press the Spin/Drain button or cancel the current cycle to pump out the excess water. Place towels around the washer in case of overflow.

If water continues to enter the tub after canceling, turn off the water faucets behind the washer immediately.

2

Check for suds overflow

Open the lid and look for excessive suds. If the tub is full of foam, too much detergent was used. High-efficiency (HE) washers require HE detergent — regular detergent produces too many suds.

Use about 2 tablespoons of HE detergent per load. More is not better — excess suds reduce cleaning power.

3

Test the water inlet valve

If the water continues flowing even after the washer stops calling for water, the inlet valve is stuck open. Turn off the water supply, unplug the washer, and test the valve solenoid coils with a multimeter. A stuck-open valve must be replaced — it cannot be repaired.

Even if the valve tests electrically OK, it can still be mechanically stuck due to sediment. If water drips in with the washer off, replace it.

4

Test the water level pressure switch

If the valve shuts off properly but the washer overfills, the pressure switch may not be signaling full. Check the pressure hose for kinks or disconnection. Test the switch for proper operation.

Blow gently into the pressure hose — you should hear a click from the switch at the other end.

When to call a professional

If water is overflowing rapidly and the shutoff valves don't stop the flow, you may have a plumbing issue. Call a plumber and/or appliance technician.
