Samsung Washer Error Code 5C — Drain Error (Updated Code Format)

Moderate Fix 15–45 minutes Tools: Shallow pan or tray, Towels, Pliers

What this means

The 5C error code is Samsung's updated version of the 5E drain error code used on newer model washers. It means the washer was unable to pump all the water out of the tub within the allotted time. Common causes include a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, a faulty drain pump, or a plumbing obstruction at the standpipe. This code appears on both front-load and top-load Samsung models manufactured after 2017.

Alternate codes: SC, 5E

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the drain pump filter

Locate the access panel at the front bottom of the washer. Place a shallow pan under the filter cover. Slowly unscrew the drain pump filter cap and let residual water drain into the pan. Remove the filter and clean out lint, coins, and debris.

There is usually 1–2 cups of water behind the filter even after a cycle fails to drain. Open the cap slowly to control the flow.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer forward and inspect the drain hose from the pump to the standpipe or laundry sink. Straighten any kinks. Disconnect the hose end from the standpipe and check for blockages inside.

The drain hose should be no more than 96 inches (8 feet) long from the pump to the drain point. A longer hose can cause drainage issues.

3

Listen for the drain pump

Start a Spin Only or Drain cycle and listen for the pump motor humming at the bottom front of the washer. If you hear nothing, the pump motor may be dead. If you hear it straining, an obstruction is likely inside the pump housing.

A loud buzzing or grinding from the pump area indicates something is jammed in the impeller.

4

Replace the drain pump if needed

If the pump doesn't run or has a broken impeller, it must be replaced. Unplug the washer, disconnect the pump hoses, remove the mounting screws, and install the new pump.

Before installing the new pump, flush some water through the hoses to clear any debris that could damage the new pump.

When to call a professional

If the pump and hoses are clear but the washer still won't drain, the control board may not be sending power to the pump motor. A technician should diagnose.
