Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 89E — Ice Maker Water Valve Error

Moderate Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Adjustable wrench, Towels

What this means

The 89E error code indicates the water inlet valve that supplies water to the ice maker is malfunctioning. The valve may be stuck closed (no water reaches the ice maker, so no ice is produced) or stuck open (water continuously flows, overfilling the ice tray and causing leaks). This is different from the main refrigerator water valve that serves the dispenser.

Alternate codes: 89C

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check water supply to the valve

Verify the water supply line behind the refrigerator is turned on and not kinked. Low water pressure (below 20 psi) can prevent the valve from opening properly.

Test the water pressure by disconnecting the line and running it into a bucket — you should get about 1/4 cup per 10 seconds at minimum.

2

Locate the ice maker water inlet valve

Pull the fridge from the wall. The water inlet valve is at the bottom rear of the refrigerator where the water supply line connects. It may have two solenoids — one for the dispenser and one for the ice maker.

The ice maker solenoid is usually the one on the right or labeled with a small ice crystal icon.

3

Test the valve solenoid

Unplug the refrigerator. Disconnect the solenoid wire connector. Test coil resistance with a multimeter — expect 200–500 ohms on a good solenoid. OL means the coil is open, and the valve cannot operate.

Also check for mineral deposits around the valve inlet screen that could restrict water flow.

4

Replace the water inlet valve

Turn off the water supply. Disconnect the water line and wiring from the old valve. Remove mounting screws and install the new valve. Reconnect water and wiring, then check for leaks with the supply turned on.

Run a few ice maker cycles and inspect the area for drips — a valve replaced without tightening connections properly will leak.

When to call a professional

If the valve tests good but the ice maker still doesn't fill, the ice maker module or main control board may not be sending voltage to the valve. A technician should trace the circuit.
