Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 83E — Compressor Lock / Startup Error

Professional Repair 30–120 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

The 83E error code indicates the compressor is unable to start. This can be caused by a faulty start relay, a failed compressor, a wiring issue, or an overheating condition. The compressor is the heart of the cooling system — without it running, the refrigerator will not cool at all.

Alternate codes: 83C

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Power cycle the refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator for 10 minutes. This allows the compressor to equalize pressure and attempt a fresh start. Plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start.

If you hear a click followed by a hum that stops after a few seconds, the compressor is trying to start but failing.

2

Check the start relay and overload protector

The start relay is a small device attached to the compressor terminals at the back-bottom of the fridge. Unplug the fridge and carefully remove the relay. Shake it — if it rattles, the internal contacts have broken and it needs replacement. Test with a multimeter between the S and M terminals for continuity.

A burnt smell from the relay area is a strong sign it has failed.

3

Test the compressor windings

With the relay removed, test the compressor terminal pins. Measure resistance between S (start) and M (main/run), S and C (common), and M and C. You should get readings (typically 2–15 ohms between each pair). Also test from each terminal to the compressor body — any continuity here means a ground fault.

If all windings read OL, or if there's continuity to ground, the compressor has failed.

When to call a professional

Compressor replacement involves handling refrigerant, which requires EPA certification. Always call a licensed refrigeration technician for compressor issues. However, the start relay is a common and inexpensive DIY fix that resolves many 83E errors.
