Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 27E — Freezer Defrost Heater or Multi-System Failure

Advanced Fix 45–90 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, Hair dryer or steamer

What this means

The 27E error code indicates a problem with one or more of the following systems: freezer evaporator fan, freezer defrost system, condenser fan, or ice maker. This is a composite error that can point to multiple potential failures. Ice buildup on the evaporator coils (due to defrost failure) is the most common underlying cause, which then affects the fan and ice maker.

Alternate codes: 27C

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for ice buildup

Open the freezer and check the back wall for excessive frost or ice buildup. If the back panel is frozen over, the defrost system has likely failed.

Excessive ice blocks airflow and causes the evaporator fan to work harder or stop entirely.

2

Perform a manual defrost

Unplug the refrigerator, open both doors, and let it defrost for 24 hours. Place towels at the base to absorb water. Or use a hair dryer on low heat to carefully melt ice from the back panel.

Never use sharp tools to chip ice — you could puncture the evaporator coils.

3

Test the defrost heater

After defrosting, remove the freezer back panel and test the defrost heater with a multimeter for continuity. It should read between 20 and 40 ohms.

If the heater reads open (OL), it is burned out and needs replacement.

4

Test the defrost thermostat and sensor

Check the defrost thermostat (bi-metal) for continuity when cold. It should be closed (have continuity) below its cutoff temperature. Test the defrost sensor for proper resistance.

The thermostat and sensor work together to control the defrost cycle timing.

When to call a professional

If multiple components test faulty or the error involves the ice maker or condenser fan, professional diagnosis is recommended to identify all failed components.
