Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 24E — Freezer Defrost Error

Advanced Fix 45–90 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, 1/4-inch nut driver, Hair dryer (optional)

What this means

The 24E error code indicates the freezer defrost system is not working properly. The defrost heater may not be activating, or the evaporator is not reaching the target temperature during defrost. This will cause ice to build up on the evaporator coils, eventually blocking airflow and causing poor cooling.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for frost on the evaporator

Remove freezer shelves and the rear panel inside the freezer. If the evaporator coils are heavily frosted or covered in a block of ice, the defrost system has indeed failed.

If the coils are clear, the error may have been temporary — power cycle and monitor.

2

Test the defrost heater

Disconnect the defrost heater wires and test for continuity with a multimeter. The heater should show some resistance (typically 20–40 ohms). OL means it's burned out.

The defrost heater is usually a glass tube or foil heater attached to or running through the evaporator coils.

3

Test the defrost sensor/thermostat

The defrost thermostat or bi-metal should have continuity when cold (at freezer temperature) and open when warm. If it doesn't have continuity at freezer temperature, it's faulty.

The defrost sensor often includes a thermal fuse — if the fuse is blown, the whole assembly reads open.

4

Manually defrost and reassemble

If replacing components, first melt all ice from the evaporator. Use a hair dryer on low heat or unplug the fridge with doors open for 24 hours. Install the new parts, reassemble, and monitor over the next 24–48 hours.

Do not use sharp objects to chip ice off the evaporator — you can puncture the refrigerant lines.

When to call a professional

If the heater and sensor test good, the control board's defrost circuit may be at fault. Defrost circuit board diagnosis requires a technician.
