Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 12E — Fridge Evaporator Fan Error

Advanced Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Nut driver set

What this means

The 12E error code signals that the fresh-food (refrigerator) compartment evaporator fan is not operating. On Samsung models with a dual evaporator system, this fan is separate from the freezer fan and circulates cold air specifically through the refrigerator section. When it fails, the fridge section warms up while the freezer may remain cold.

Alternate codes: 12C

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Power cycle the refrigerator

Unplug the refrigerator for 2 minutes, then restore power. Open the fridge door and listen for the fan running behind the rear panel.

Some Samsung models pause the fridge fan when the door is open. Press the door switch to simulate a closed door while listening.

2

Access the fridge evaporator fan

Remove shelves and drawers as needed to access the rear panel inside the refrigerator compartment. Remove the screws and carefully pull the panel away to expose the fan motor.

Check for ice or frost buildup behind the panel — this indicates a defrost issue in the fridge evaporator section.

3

Test the fan motor

Unplug the refrigerator. Disconnect the fan motor connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals with a multimeter. Expect 5–40 ohms on a good motor.

Spin the blade by hand to check for free rotation. A grinding or stuck motor needs replacement regardless of ohm reading.

4

Replace the fan motor if needed

Remove the mounting hardware and swap in the new fan motor. Reconnect the wire harness, reinstall the rear panel, and restore power.

Run the fridge for 6–8 hours and verify the fridge temperature drops to the set point.

When to call a professional

If the motor tests fine but the error persists, the control board or wiring harness between the board and motor may be faulty. Have a technician inspect.
