Samsung Oven Error Code C-20 — Temperature Sensor Short Circuit
What this means
The C-20 error code indicates the oven temperature sensor (RTD or thermistor) is reading abnormally low resistance, suggesting a short circuit in the sensor or its wiring. The control board relies on the sensor to regulate oven temperature accurately, and a shorted sensor would cause the board to read an erroneously high temperature. The oven will stop heating as a safety precaution.
Alternate codes: C20
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsPower cycle the oven
Turn off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes, turn it back on, and try to preheat the oven.
If the error was a one-time glitch, a reset may clear it.
Test the oven temperature sensor
Unplug the oven. Locate the temperature sensor inside the oven cavity — it is typically a thin metal probe near the top rear of the oven. Disconnect the sensor's wire harness and test with a multimeter. At room temperature, a Samsung oven sensor should read approximately 1,100 ohms. A reading under 940 ohms indicates a short.
The resistance increases as temperature increases — at 350°F it reads approximately 1,600 ohms.
Check the sensor wiring
Inspect the wire harness from the sensor to the control board for any damage, pinching, or exposed conductors that could cause a short.
Wires routed near the oven cavity can deteriorate from heat exposure over time.
Replace the temperature sensor if faulty
Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the sensor in place, pull the sensor out through the back of the oven, and install the replacement. Reconnect the wire harness.
The sensor is one of the easiest oven components to replace.
When to call a professional
If the sensor and wiring test good, the control board may be misinterpreting the sensor signal. Professional diagnosis of the control board is recommended.
