Samsung Dryer Error Code HC1 — High Temperature During Cooling Cycle
What this means
The HC1 error code indicates the dryer's temperature remained too high during the cool-down phase at the end of a cycle. Normally the heater shuts off and the drum continues tumbling with unheated air to bring the temperature down. If the temperature stays elevated, it suggests the heating element relay is stuck on, the vent is severely clogged (trapping hot air), or the cool-down thermostat is not functioning.
Alternate codes: hC1
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the dryer vent system
Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer. Check the hose, wall duct, and exterior vent cap for lint buildup. Clean everything thoroughly.
A severely clogged vent is the #1 cause of overheating. If the run to outside is very long, consider hiring a vent cleaning service.
Test the high-limit thermostat
Unplug the dryer. Locate the high-limit thermostat (usually near the heating element or on the blower housing). Disconnect and test for continuity — it should show continuity at room temperature.
If the thermostat is open at room temperature, it has already tripped and needs replacement. But always find and fix the cause (usually a vent blockage) first.
Check the heating element for grounding
Test from each heating element terminal to the element housing. Any continuity here means the element has a ground fault and is partially energizing even when the control board turns it off.
A grounded element is a serious issue — it can cause the element to heat continuously even during cool-down.
Inspect the control board relay
If the vent is clear, the thermostat is good, and the element is not grounded, the heater relay on the main control board may be stuck in the ON position. Listen for a relay click when the heater should turn off. If the relay does not click, the board may need replacement.
This requires advanced troubleshooting. If you hear no click and the element stays hot, replace the control board.
When to call a professional
If you suspect a stuck relay on the control board, have a technician replace it. A stuck-on heater relay is a fire hazard and should be addressed immediately.
