F4

Miele Refrigerator Error Code F4 — Fan Motor Fault

Advanced Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Screwdriver set, Multimeter

What this means

Error F4 on Miele refrigerators indicates a fan motor has failed. The internal circulation fan (evaporator fan) distributes cold air through the fridge and freezer compartments. If it stops, the freezer may remain cold (near the evaporator) but the fridge compartment will warm up. On some models, F4 may also refer to the condenser fan. The control board detects the fault via a speed sensor or by monitoring current draw.

Alternate codes: F 4, F04

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Identify which fan is affected

Open the fridge door. Can you hear the fan running? On most models, the evaporator fan stops when the door is open. Close the door and listen — you should hear a soft fan hum. Also check the condenser fan at the bottom rear of the machine (if equipped).

Some Miele models do not have a condenser fan (using natural convection instead). Check your model specifications.

2

Check for ice blocking the fan

If the evaporator has iced over (due to a defrost issue), the fan blades may be locked by ice. Remove the back panel inside the fridge/freezer and look for ice around the fan. Defrost if necessary.

A buzzing or clicking sound from the fan area usually means the motor is trying to run but the blades are blocked by ice.

3

Test the fan motor

Unplug the refrigerator. Disconnect the fan motor wires and test for continuity/resistance. A DC fan motor should have a measurable resistance (typically 50–300 ohms). Also try spinning the fan blade by hand — it should spin freely.

If the fan blade is stiff or grinds when spun, the motor bearings have worn out.

4

Replace the fan motor

If the motor has failed, remove the mounting screws (usually 2–4), disconnect the wiring, and install the new motor. Ensure the blade is properly seated on the shaft.

When reinstalling the back panel, make sure no wires are pinched between the panel and the wall.

When to call a professional

If the fan motor and wiring are fine but F4 persists, the control board's fan output circuit may have failed.
