F12

Miele Dryer Error Code F12 — Drum Motor Fault

Advanced Repair 30–75 minutes Tools: Screwdriver set, Multimeter, Socket set

What this means

Error F12 on Miele dryers indicates the drum motor has failed to start, has stalled during operation, or is drawing abnormal current. Causes include a broken drive belt (the motor runs but the drum does not turn), a seized drum bearing, a faulty motor start capacitor, or a burned-out motor winding. On some models, F12 is also triggered if the motor overheats and the thermal overload trips.

Alternate codes: F 12

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check if the drum turns freely

Open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with minimal resistance. If it is stiff, grinding, or locked, there may be a bearing issue or an object caught between the drum and housing.

Small items like bra underwires, coins, or buttons can wedge between the drum and the front or rear seal.

2

Inspect the drive belt

Remove the top panel and/or front panel to access the drive belt. Check if the belt is intact, properly seated on the drum and motor pulley, and has correct tension. A broken belt will allow the motor to spin freely without turning the drum.

Miele dryer belts are long and thin. A new belt will feel tight; a stretched belt may slip under load.

3

Test the motor electrically

Unplug the dryer. Disconnect the motor leads and test winding resistance with a multimeter. Also check for a ground fault (motor terminal to frame). If a start capacitor is used, test its capacitance.

A motor that hums but does not turn often has a failed start capacitor.

4

Check the motor thermal overload

The motor may have an internal thermal overload that trips if the motor gets too hot (due to a restricted vent or overuse). Let the dryer cool for 2 hours and retry. If F12 clears, the motor overheated. Address the root cause (clean vents, reduce load).

Persistent motor overheating will eventually burn out the windings. Find and fix the cause.

When to call a professional

Motor and belt replacement on Miele dryers can be mechanically involved. If you are not comfortable removing panels and working with belts, call a technician.
