Miele Dryer Error Code F03 — Lint Filter or Airflow Restriction
What this means
Error F03 on Miele dryers indicates the airflow through the machine is insufficient. Miele dryers monitor exhaust air temperature and drying performance to detect restricted airflow. Causes include a full lint filter, a blocked secondary lint screen (in the door or base), a kinked or crushed exhaust hose, a blocked external vent, or a failed blower motor. This is one of the most common and most preventable Miele dryer faults.
Alternate codes: F 03, F3
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the primary lint filter
Open the dryer door and remove the lint filter from the door opening. Peel off all lint and rinse the filter under warm water if it has fabric softener residue. Let it dry before reinserting.
Miele recommends cleaning the lint filter before every drying cycle. A clogged filter is the number one cause of F03.
Clean the secondary filters and heat exchanger
Miele dryers (especially heat-pump models) have additional filter panels — often at the base of the machine behind a flip-down panel. Remove and vacuum these filters. On heat-pump models, also clean the heat exchanger fins with the provided cleaning tool or a soft brush.
The heat exchanger on Miele heat-pump dryers can be accessed by a small door at the bottom left. Even slight lint buildup on the fins dramatically reduces efficiency.
Check the exhaust vent (vented models)
For vented Miele dryers, check the exhaust hose from the back of the dryer to the wall outlet. Disconnect it and look through for lint buildup. Also check the exterior vent flap — it should open freely when the dryer is running.
Use a dryer vent cleaning brush kit to clean the full length of the vent duct. Lint accumulation in the duct is a fire hazard.
Check the blower/fan motor
If all filters and ducts are clear but F03 persists, the blower fan may be faulty. Listen for the fan sound when the dryer runs — a weak or absent fan sound indicates a motor issue.
On heat-pump models, a failed condenser fan can also trigger F03 even though the main blower works.
When to call a professional
If the blower motor or condenser fan has failed, or if the exhaust duct is routed through walls and cannot be cleaned from the ends, a professional should service the machine.
