Miele Dishwasher Error Code F85 — Water Turbidity Sensor Fault

Moderate Fix 20–40 minutes Tools: Torx screwdriver set, Soft cloth, Multimeter

What this means

The F85 error code on Miele dishwashers indicates the turbidity sensor (water clarity sensor) is malfunctioning. This sensor measures how dirty the wash water is by shining a light through it and measuring how much light passes through. The dishwasher uses this information to decide whether to extend the wash cycle or change the water. A contaminated sensor lens, a loose connector, or a failed sensor can trigger this error.

Alternate codes: F 85

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the dishwasher interior

Run an empty cycle on the hottest setting with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. Grease and food film on the sensor lens can cause false readings.

Miele recommends using their branded machine cleaner periodically. Excessive grease buildup is the most common cause of turbidity sensor errors.

2

Clean the turbidity sensor lens

Open the dishwasher and remove the lower rack and filter assembly. The turbidity sensor is located in the sump area, usually identifiable by a small glass or plastic window. Wipe the sensor lens gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove any film or deposits.

Use a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar for stubborn mineral deposits on the sensor lens.

3

Check the sensor connections

Turn off the breaker and access the underside of the dishwasher. Locate the turbidity sensor connector and ensure it is firmly seated. Inspect the wires for damage.

Moisture can sometimes corrode the sensor connector pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if corrosion is present.

4

Replace the turbidity sensor

If cleaning and reconnecting do not resolve the error, the sensor has likely failed. Remove the old sensor from the sump housing, install the replacement, and reconnect the wire harness. Run a full cycle to verify.

After replacing the sensor, run an empty hot cycle first to establish a clean-water baseline reading.

When to call a professional

If the sensor replacement does not resolve the error, the control board's sensor circuit may be faulty. A Miele-certified technician can diagnose the electronics.
