Miele Dishwasher Error Code F84 — Door Position Sensor Fault

Moderate Repair 20–45 minutes Tools: Torx screwdriver set, Multimeter

What this means

Error F84 on Miele dishwashers indicates the door position sensor is not providing the expected signal. On Miele models with AutoOpen drying (where the door automatically opens a crack after the final rinse), a dedicated position sensor monitors the exact door angle. If this sensor fails, the AutoOpen function and cycle completion are affected. F84 can also appear if the door hinge mechanism is binding.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check door movement

Open and close the dishwasher door slowly. It should move smoothly through its full range without sticking, grinding, or resistance. If the door feels stiff or catches at certain angles, the hinge springs or mechanism may need adjustment.

Miele AutoOpen uses a small motor to push the door open. If the door is too heavy or stiff, the motor cannot achieve the correct position.

2

Inspect the door hinge area

Remove the kickplate and inspect the door hinge mechanism on both sides. Look for broken springs, loose mounting bolts, or debris caught in the hinge area.

A broken door spring will make the door slam down when opened — this is obvious and the spring should be replaced immediately for safety.

3

Locate and check the position sensor

The door position sensor is typically mounted near the hinge assembly or inside the door panel. Inspect its connector and wiring. Reseat the connector.

The sensor may use a magnetic reed switch or a potentiometer — the type depends on the model generation.

4

Test the sensor

With the dishwasher unplugged, disconnect the sensor and test it with a multimeter. For a reed switch type, it should show continuity when a magnet is nearby and open-circuit when the magnet is removed. For a potentiometer type, resistance should change smoothly as the door moves.

If the sensor's magnet has shifted position (loose mounting), simply reattaching it may resolve the error.

When to call a professional

If the AutoOpen motor or the door hinge mechanism needs replacement, a Miele technician should perform the repair due to the spring tension involved.
