F53

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F53 — Circulation Pump Speed Sensor Fault

Advanced Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Screwdriver set, Multimeter

What this means

Error F53 specifically indicates the circulation pump's speed/tachometer sensor is faulty. Modern Miele dishwashers use variable-speed circulation pumps controlled by the electronic board. The speed sensor (Hall effect or similar) provides RPM feedback. If this feedback is missing or erratic, the board cannot regulate pump speed and displays F53. The pump motor itself may be fine.

Alternate codes: F 53

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Confirm the pump motor runs

Start a cycle and listen. If you hear the pump motor running and water spraying, the motor is fine and the issue is isolated to the speed sensor feedback.

The pump may run at full speed without modulation if the sensor has failed — the board defaults to a safety mode.

2

Access the circulation pump

Unplug the dishwasher and access the circulation pump from the base. Locate the speed sensor — it is typically a small component mounted on the back of the motor housing, connected by 2–3 thin wires.

The speed sensor may look like a small disc or ring at the rear of the motor.

3

Check the sensor connection

Inspect and reseat the speed sensor connector. Check the wires for damage. A loose connection is the most common cause of F53.

Moisture can corrode the thin sensor wires over time — look for green oxidation on the pins.

4

Test or replace the speed sensor

If the connection is good, test the sensor output with a multimeter (DC voltage while the motor runs, if you can safely do so). If no output, the sensor has failed. On most Miele models, the speed sensor is part of the pump motor assembly and is not sold separately.

If the sensor is integrated into the motor, the entire pump motor assembly will need to be replaced.

When to call a professional

Speed sensor testing requires measuring electrical signals on a running motor, which can be hazardous. Professional diagnosis is recommended.
