Miele Dishwasher Error Code F52 — Circulation Pump Motor Fault

Advanced Repair 45–90 minutes Tools: Screwdriver set, Multimeter, Towels, Pliers

What this means

Error F52 indicates the main wash circulation pump has a motor fault. The control board monitors the pump motor's current draw and RPM. If the motor does not start, stalls, draws too much current, or runs at the wrong speed, F52 is displayed. Causes include a seized pump impeller (foreign object or bearing failure), a faulty motor winding, a failed pump motor capacitor, or a control board triac failure.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Listen for the pump at startup

Start a cycle and listen carefully. A humming noise without water spraying suggests the pump motor is energized but the impeller is stuck. Complete silence means no power is reaching the motor. A grinding noise indicates bearing failure or a foreign object.

Put your ear close to the base of the dishwasher — the circulation pump is typically at the bottom center.

2

Check for impeller obstructions

Unplug the dishwasher, remove the lower spray arm and filters. Try to reach the circulation pump impeller through the sump opening. Check for broken glass, bones, or other debris jamming the impeller.

On some Miele models, you need to remove the sump cover (2–4 Torx screws) to access the impeller.

3

Test the pump motor electrically

Access the circulation pump motor from below the dishwasher. Disconnect the motor terminals and test the windings with a multimeter. Expected resistance varies by model but is typically 3–15 ohms. Also test for ground fault (motor terminal to motor housing).

If the motor reads very low resistance (under 1 ohm) or shows continuity to ground, the motor windings have shorted.

4

Check the motor capacitor (if applicable)

Some Miele circulation pump motors use a start/run capacitor. If present, test its capacitance with a multimeter that has a capacitance function. A significantly low reading means the capacitor has degraded.

A weak capacitor may allow the motor to hum but not start, especially under load.

When to call a professional

Circulation pump replacement on Miele dishwashers often requires removing the entire sump assembly. This is a labor-intensive repair best handled by a professional.
