Maytag Refrigerator Error Code dE — Defrost Error

Moderate Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Hair dryer or steamer

What this means

The dE error code on Maytag refrigerators indicates a failure in the automatic defrost system. When defrost fails, frost accumulates on the evaporator coils in the freezer, blocking airflow and causing the fresh food section to warm up while the freezer becomes excessively icy. Common causes include a burned-out defrost heater, a failed defrost thermostat, or a malfunctioning defrost timer/control board.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for frost buildup

Remove items from the freezer and take out the freezer shelves and back panel to access the evaporator coils. Heavy frost or ice buildup on the coils confirms the defrost system has failed.

Use a hair dryer on low heat to melt excess ice before working on the coils. Place towels below to catch water.

2

Test the defrost heater

Locate the defrost heater element beneath or alongside the evaporator coils. Disconnect its wires and test for continuity with a multimeter. A good heater shows continuity; no reading means it's burned out.

The heater is usually a glass tube element — handle it carefully as it's fragile.

3

Test the defrost thermostat (bi-metal)

The defrost thermostat is clipped to the evaporator coil tubing. It must close its circuit (show continuity) when cold (below 30°F). If it doesn't show continuity when cold, replace it.

Put the thermostat in a glass of ice water for 5 minutes, then test — this simulates cold operating conditions.

4

Check the defrost control board

If both the heater and thermostat test good, the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control board may be faulty. This board controls when and how long defrost cycles run. Replace it if the other components pass testing.

The defrost control board is usually located behind the temperature control panel in the fresh food section.

When to call a professional

If you're uncomfortable working inside the freezer compartment or testing electrical components, a technician can diagnose and fix the defrost system efficiently.
