Maytag Dishwasher Error Code E3 — Heating Element Failure

Moderate Repair 30–50 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver

What this means

The E3 error on Maytag dishwashers indicates a problem with the water heating system. The dishwasher's heating element or thermostat is not bringing water to the correct wash temperature. This results in poor cleaning performance and dishes that don't dry properly. The heating element can burn out over time due to mineral deposits from hard water.

Alternate codes: F3 E1, E3F1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Verify hot water supply

Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it's fully hot before starting the dishwasher. The incoming water should be at least 120°F (49°C) for proper operation.

If your hot water heater is set too low, the dishwasher's internal heater has to work much harder.

2

Run a diagnostic cycle

Many Maytag dishwashers have a diagnostic mode activated by pressing specific button sequences (check your manual). This can confirm whether the heating element is receiving power.

Common diagnostic entry: press the heated dry button, then normal wash button, then heated dry again, then normal wash — all within 5 seconds.

3

Test the heating element

Disconnect power at the breaker. Access the heating element terminals from underneath the dishwasher. Use a multimeter to check resistance — a working element reads 10–50 ohms. An open reading means it's burned out.

Also check for continuity to ground — if the element is grounded, it can trip the breaker.

4

Replace the heating element

Remove the dishwasher's lower spray arm and the lower rack. Unscrew the element mounting nuts from underneath. Carefully remove the old element and install the new one. Reconnect wires and test.

Apply plumber's putty or the provided gasket around the mounting points to ensure a watertight seal.

When to call a professional

If the heating element tests fine, the issue may be the thermostat or the control board — both require more advanced diagnostics.
