LG Washer Error Code E3 — Drainage or Freeze Issue
What this means
The E3 error code on LG top-load washers indicates a drainage problem. In colder climates, this is often caused by frozen water inside the drain hose or pump. In warmer conditions, the error can be triggered by a clogged drain filter, kinked drain hose, or a malfunctioning drain pump. The washer will pause the cycle and display E3 when it cannot evacuate water from the tub within the expected timeframe.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsClean the drain pump filter
Locate the drain pump filter access panel at the front bottom of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath. Slowly open the filter cap and let water drain into the pan. Remove the filter and clear any lint, coins, or debris.
Clean the drain filter every 1–2 months to prevent future drainage errors.
Inspect the drain hose
Pull the washer away from the wall and check the drain hose for kinks, clogs, or ice (in winter). Disconnect the hose from the standpipe and run water through it to confirm it flows freely.
The drain hose should be no higher than 96 inches (244 cm) from the floor for proper siphon drainage.
Thaw frozen components (if applicable)
If the drain hose or pump is frozen, wrap affected areas with warm, damp towels. Pour 50–60°C warm water into the tub and wait 1–2 hours for everything to thaw before testing again.
If freezing is a recurring problem, consider relocating the washer to a heated area or adding pipe insulation.
Test the drain pump
After clearing the filter and hose, run a Rinse + Spin cycle. Listen for the drain pump motor. If you hear humming but no water drains, the pump impeller may be stuck or broken. If there is no sound at all, the pump motor may have failed.
A healthy drain pump makes a steady whirring sound. Grinding or clicking indicates a foreign object in the impeller.
When to call a professional
If the drain filter and hose are clear but the pump does not activate, the drain pump motor or the main control board relay driving it may need professional replacement.
