LG Refrigerator Error Code gF — Water Flow Sensor Error
What this means
The gF error code on LG refrigerators indicates a malfunction in the water flow sensor, which monitors the volume of water delivered to the ice maker. This can be caused by a closed water supply valve, a kinked water line, low household water pressure, a clogged water filter, or a faulty flow sensor. When this code appears, the ice maker may overfill, underfill, or stop producing ice entirely. This code is common on LG French Door and InstaView models with in-door water dispensers and ice makers.
Alternate codes: GF, Er gF, Er-gF
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck the water supply valve
Locate the water supply valve behind or beneath the refrigerator (usually at the wall). Make sure it is fully open. A partially closed valve restricts water flow and can trigger the gF code.
Turn the valve fully counterclockwise to open it. If it feels stiff or corroded, the valve itself may need replacement.
Inspect the water supply line
Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and inspect the water supply line for kinks, bends, or pinches. Straighten any kinks and ensure the line runs freely without being crushed by the refrigerator.
Copper lines are more prone to kinking than braided stainless-steel lines. Consider upgrading if you have a copper line.
Replace the water filter
A clogged water filter restricts flow. Remove the current filter and install a new LG-certified replacement. After installing, flush 2–3 gallons of water through the dispenser to clear air and carbon residue.
LG recommends replacing the water filter every 6 months. Using non-certified filters can restrict flow and trigger error codes.
Test the water flow sensor
If the code persists after checking the supply and filter, the flow sensor itself may be faulty. The sensor is located inside the refrigerator near the water inlet valve. Unplug the refrigerator, access the sensor, and test for continuity with a multimeter.
The flow sensor uses a small turbine wheel — if it is stuck due to mineral buildup, cleaning it with white vinegar may restore function.
When to call a professional
If the water supply, filter, and line are all in good condition but the gF code persists, a technician should test and replace the flow sensor or check the main control board for a communication fault.
