Er FF

LG Refrigerator Error Code Er FF — Freezer Fan Error

Advanced Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Screwdriver, Multimeter, Hair dryer

What this means

The Er FF error code indicates the freezer's evaporator fan is not operating. This fan is responsible for circulating cold air from the evaporator coils throughout the freezer (and into the refrigerator compartment). When it fails, both the freezer and refrigerator will warm up. Causes include a failed fan motor, ice blocking the fan, or a wiring problem.

Alternate codes: FF

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Listen for the fan

Open the freezer door and press and hold the door switch. Listen for the evaporator fan (located behind the rear panel inside the freezer). If you hear nothing, the fan is not running.

The fan stops when the freezer door opens. You must hold the door switch to hear it with the door open.

2

Check for ice blockage

Remove the food from the freezer and unscrew the rear evaporator panel. Look for heavy frost or ice buildup around the evaporator coils and fan. If the fan is encased in ice, it cannot spin. Use a hair dryer to carefully melt the ice.

Heavy frost on the evaporator usually indicates a defrost system failure — the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer may be faulty.

3

Test the fan motor

Disconnect the fan motor's wire connector. Test for 12V DC at the connector when the refrigerator is running (with door switch held). If voltage is present but the motor doesn't spin, the motor is faulty. If no voltage, the control board may not be sending power.

4

Replace the fan motor

Remove the mounting clips or screws holding the fan motor. Disconnect the wire harness, swap in the new motor, and reassemble. Plug the refrigerator back in and verify the fan runs.

Transfer the fan blade from the old motor to the new one if a blade is not included with the replacement.

When to call a professional

If ice is repeatedly building up on the evaporator, the underlying defrost system needs repair (defrost heater, bi-metal thermostat, or defrost timer/control board). A technician should diagnose the root cause.
