LG Refrigerator Error Code CH — High-Side Refrigerant Leak
What this means
The CH error code on LG refrigerators indicates a suspected refrigerant leak on the high-pressure side of the sealed refrigeration system. CH stands for 'Cycle High' and means the condenser temperature and compressor sensor readings are abnormal, suggesting refrigerant may be escaping from the condenser, compressor discharge line, or related high-side components. This is a serious fault that affects the refrigerator's ability to cool. The linear compressor may run continuously without achieving target temperatures. This error requires professional diagnosis and sealed-system repair, which is covered under LG's 10-year linear compressor warranty on qualifying models.
Alternate codes: E CH, Er CH
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsNote the error and check temperatures
Record the CH error code and check the current refrigerator and freezer temperatures on the display. If temperatures are rising above normal (above 40 °F refrigerator / 0 °F freezer), move perishable food to a cooler.
Do not attempt to clear or ignore this code — a refrigerant leak will worsen over time and can damage the compressor.
Clean the condenser coils
In some cases, extremely dirty condenser coils can cause abnormal temperature readings that mimic a CH error. Unplug the refrigerator and use a coil brush or vacuum to clean the condenser coils located at the bottom rear of the unit.
If the CH code clears after cleaning and the refrigerator cools normally within 24 hours, the issue was likely dirty coils rather than a leak.
Check for compressor operation
With the refrigerator plugged in, listen for the compressor running. If the compressor is running but the refrigerator is not cooling, this strongly indicates a refrigerant issue. If the compressor is not running at all, the problem may be electrical.
Place your hand on the condenser coils — they should feel warm to hot when the compressor is running. If they are cool, refrigerant may be low.
Contact LG or a certified technician
A CH error requires a sealed-system technician with EPA Section 608 certification to diagnose, locate, and repair the refrigerant leak. If your refrigerator has an LG linear compressor, check if the 10-year compressor warranty applies to your model.
Have your model and serial number ready when calling. LG's compressor warranty covers the compressor and sealed system on many models manufactured after 2018.
When to call a professional
Immediately. A CH error indicates a sealed-system refrigerant leak that only a certified technician can repair. This is not a DIY-serviceable issue. Check your LG warranty status — many models have a 10-year compressor and sealed-system warranty.
