LG Oven/Range Error Code F2 — Oven Exceeded Maximum Safe Temperature

Advanced Fix 30–60 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, Infrared thermometer (optional)

What this means

The F2 error code on LG ovens is a safety shutoff that triggers when the oven cavity temperature exceeds the manufacturer's maximum allowable limit. This can happen because of a faulty temperature sensor reporting falsely low readings (causing the board to keep heating), a stuck relay on the control board, or a failed cooling fan. The oven will not operate until the issue is resolved and the error is cleared.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Let the oven cool and reset

Turn off the oven immediately and open the door carefully. Allow it to cool for 30–60 minutes. Turn off the breaker for two minutes, restore power, and test with a bake cycle at 350 °F.

Place an oven-safe thermometer inside to independently monitor the actual temperature during the test.

2

Test the temperature sensor

Turn off the breaker. Disconnect the sensor harness at the rear of the range. Measure resistance — expect about 1,080–1,100 ohms at room temperature. A reading significantly below normal causes the board to overshoot.

A sensor reading of 800–900 ohms will cause the oven to overheat by 50–100 °F before the board catches up.

3

Check the cooling fan

The cooling fan prevents the control electronics from overheating. With the breaker off, access it from the rear panel. Spin the blade by hand — it should rotate freely. Check the motor for continuity.

During a bake cycle, you should hear the cooling fan running. If it's silent, the motor is likely failed.

4

Inspect the control board relay

If the sensor and fan are good but the oven still overheats, a relay on the main board may be welded shut. This sends continuous power to the heating element regardless of temperature. This requires board replacement.

Do not continue using the oven if it overheats repeatedly — this is a fire hazard.

When to call a professional

An oven that repeatedly overheats is dangerous. If replacing the temperature sensor doesn't fix the problem, have a technician inspect the control board relays and cooling fan immediately.
