LG Dryer Error Code HS — Humidity Sensor Error

Moderate Fix 20–45 minutes Tools: Screwdriver, Fine sandpaper or steel wool, Rubbing alcohol

What this means

The HS error code means the dryer's humidity (moisture) sensor is malfunctioning. This sensor measures the moisture level in clothes to determine when they're dry. If it fails, the dryer can't auto-detect dryness and may run too long, too short, or not at all in sensor-based cycles.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the moisture sensor bars

Open the dryer door and locate the two metal sensor bars inside the drum — usually on the front bulkhead near the lint filter opening. Clean them with fine sandpaper or a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove dryer sheet residue and mineral deposits.

Fabric softener dryer sheets leave an invisible film on the sensor bars that insulates them and causes HS errors.

2

Run a test cycle

After cleaning the sensor bars, run a sensor-based drying cycle with a damp load. If the cycle runs correctly and stops when clothes are dry, the issue was dirty sensor bars.

If you use dryer sheets regularly, clean the sensor bars monthly to prevent buildup.

3

Test the sensor circuit

If cleaning doesn't help, the sensor or its wiring may be faulty. Unplug the dryer. Remove the front panel to access the sensor wiring. Check continuity from the sensor bars to the control board connector. An open circuit indicates a broken wire or failed sensor.

4

Use timed dry as a workaround

While waiting for a replacement sensor, you can still use the dryer by selecting Timed Dry cycles instead of sensor-based cycles. Timed Dry runs for the set duration regardless of the moisture sensor.

When to call a professional

If the sensor bars are clean and the wiring is intact but the HS error persists, the moisture sensor assembly or the control board may need replacement. A technician can test the sensor signal directly.
