LG Dishwasher Error Code OE1 — Drain Fault (Persistent)

Moderate Fix 20–40 minutes Tools: Towels, Shallow pan, Pliers

What this means

The OE1 error code on LG dishwashers indicates a persistent drainage fault — the dishwasher has attempted to drain multiple times but water remains in the sump. While the standard OE code can sometimes be resolved with a simple filter cleaning, OE1 indicates the control board has attempted drainage retries and still cannot clear the water. Common causes include a severely clogged drain filter, a blocked drain hose, a blocked garbage disposal or air gap connection, a failed drain pump motor, or a faulty drain pump impeller. On LG QuadWash models with the Smart Rinse system, debris can accumulate in the fine-mesh filter more quickly than in standard models.

Alternate codes: OE 1

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the drain filter assembly

Remove the bottom dish rack. Locate the drain filter assembly at the bottom of the tub (usually a cylindrical mesh filter that twists out). Remove the filter, the mesh screen beneath it, and the cover plate. Clean all components thoroughly under running water with a soft brush.

Food particles, broken glass, and label fragments are common culprits. Check the sump cavity below the filter for debris as well.

2

Check the drain hose

Pull the dishwasher out carefully and inspect the drain hose from the pump to the sink drain connection. Look for kinks, pinches, or clogs. Disconnect the hose from the sink drain or garbage disposal and check for blockages inside.

Blow through the hose or flush it with water to confirm it is clear.

3

Check the garbage disposal knockout plug

If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet port has been removed. A new garbage disposal installation sometimes leaves this plug in place, completely blocking drainage.

Shine a flashlight into the dishwasher inlet port on the disposal. If you see a solid disc instead of an open hole, the knockout needs to be punched out.

4

Test the drain pump

If the filter and hose are clear, the drain pump motor may have failed. Listen during a drain cycle — you should hear the pump running. If it is silent, the pump motor needs replacement. If it hums but does not drain, the impeller may be jammed or broken.

A small piece of glass or a seed can jam the drain pump impeller. Accessing the impeller requires removing the pump assembly.

When to call a professional

If the drain filter is clean, the hose is clear, and the pump still does not drain, a technician should replace the drain pump assembly. Also call a pro if you cannot access the drain hose or garbage disposal connection.
