LG Dishwasher Error Code LE1 — Water Leak Detected (Float Switch)
What this means
The LE1 error code on LG dishwashers indicates the leak detection float switch in the base of the unit has been triggered. Water has accumulated in the bottom pan beneath the dishwasher tub, activating the float switch and shutting down the unit to prevent water damage. Common causes include a leaking door seal/gasket, a cracked or loose hose connection inside the unit, a failed sump seal, a leaking water inlet valve, or oversudsing (using too much or the wrong type of detergent). On LG QuadWash models, the multi-motion spray arms have additional hose connections that can develop leaks over time. The dishwasher will not operate until the leak is resolved and the base pan is dried.
Alternate codes: LE 1
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCancel the cycle and turn off water
Press CANCEL/DRAIN to stop the cycle. Turn off the water supply valve to the dishwasher. Turn off the circuit breaker for safety. Place towels around the base of the dishwasher to catch any water.
Do not tilt the dishwasher forward — water in the base pan can flow into electrical components.
Check for oversudsing
Open the dishwasher and look for excessive suds or foam inside the tub. Using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent, or using too much detergent, causes oversudsing that can push water past the door seal. If suds are present, run a rinse-only cycle with no detergent after the base pan is dried.
Only use detergent specifically designed for automatic dishwashers. Never use hand dish soap.
Inspect the door seal/gasket
Open the door and examine the rubber gasket around the door perimeter. Look for tears, gaps, cracks, or areas where the gasket has pulled away from the door frame. Also check for food debris caught in the gasket that could prevent a proper seal.
Wipe the gasket and the mating surface on the tub with a damp cloth. Even a small piece of debris can break the seal.
Tilt and dry the base pan
Carefully tilt the dishwasher backward (with someone holding it) to access the base. Use towels to soak up any water in the base pan. The float switch will not reset until the water is removed from the base. After drying, restore the dishwasher to its upright position.
If you see water flowing from a specific hose or connection when the unit is tilted, you have identified the leak source.
When to call a professional
If the leak source is not obvious (door seal, oversudsing), a technician should inspect the internal hose connections, sump seal, water inlet valve, and spray arm connections. On QuadWash models, the multi-motion arm hose fittings are a known leak point.
