LG Dishwasher Error Code HE — Heater Error
What this means
The HE error code means the LG dishwasher's heating element is not raising the water temperature as expected. The dishwasher uses a heater to bring water to the optimal cleaning temperature and for the heated dry cycle. A faulty heating element, a failed thermostat, or a control board issue can cause this error.
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsCheck the hot water supply
Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it's hot before starting the dishwasher. If the incoming water is already warm, the heater has less work to do and the HE error is less likely to trigger from slow heating.
If your hot water heater is set below 120°F, the dishwasher's heater has to work harder to reach cleaning temperature.
Reset the dishwasher
Unplug the dishwasher for 10 minutes and plug it back in. Start a heavy-duty cycle (which uses the most heating). If the HE error returns, the heating element or its circuit is likely faulty.
Test the heating element
Unplug the dishwasher. Access the heating element connections (usually under the tub at the bottom of the machine). Disconnect the wires and test with a multimeter — the element should read approximately 10–30 ohms. An open circuit (infinity) means the element has burned out.
Also check for continuity between each terminal and ground — any reading indicates a ground fault (replace immediately).
When to call a professional
If the heating element is burned out, replacing it requires accessing the bottom of the dishwasher and potentially removing the unit from the cabinet. A technician can also verify whether the control board relay is at fault.
