KitchenAid Refrigerator Error Code E2 — Fresh Food Temperature Sensor Fault

Advanced 30–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

The E2 error code on KitchenAid refrigerators indicates the fresh food compartment temperature sensor (thermistor) has failed. The control board cannot accurately read the refrigerator section's temperature, which can cause the compressor to run nonstop (overcooling) or not run enough (warm fridge). Food may freeze or spoil.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Locate the thermistor

The fresh food thermistor is typically located behind a small plastic housing on the upper interior wall of the refrigerator compartment. Remove the housing cover to access it.

2

Test the thermistor

Unplug the refrigerator. Disconnect the thermistor and test with a multimeter. At room temperature (~72°F), a typical KitchenAid thermistor reads approximately 30,000–35,000 ohms. An infinite or zero reading means it has failed.

The resistance should change as the temperature changes — lower resistance at higher temperatures.

3

Check the wiring

Inspect the wire connections for corrosion or damage before replacing the sensor.

4

Replace the thermistor

If the thermistor reads out of range, replace it. It's a small sensor with two wires — simply disconnect the old one and plug in the new one.

When to call a professional

If the sensor is good but the refrigerator still has temperature problems, the main control board may be faulty.
