KitchenAid Refrigerator Error Code 24E — Freezer Defrost Heater Error

Advanced DIY 30-60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4 inch nut driver, Multimeter

What this means

Error code 24E indicates a problem with the freezer defrost heater circuit. Either the heater element has an open circuit (broken filament) or the heater has been energized for over 80 continuous minutes, indicating the defrost thermostat may be stuck closed. The defrost system prevents frost from building up on the evaporator coils. A failed defrost system leads to excessive frost, poor cooling, and eventual freezer failure.

Step-by-step fix

5 steps
1

Check for frost buildup

Open the freezer and remove the interior back panel. Check the evaporator coils for heavy frost or ice buildup, which confirms a defrost system failure.

Heavy frost covering the entire coil area is a telltale sign of a defrost problem.

2

Manually defrost if needed

If the coils are heavily frosted, unplug the refrigerator and let it defrost for several hours with the doors open. Place towels to catch the water.

You can speed up defrosting with a hair dryer on low heat — do not use sharp objects to chip ice.

3

Test the defrost heater

With the freezer back panel removed, locate the defrost heater (a glass tube or wire element along the evaporator coils). Disconnect and test with a multimeter for continuity.

No continuity (OL) means the heater element is broken and must be replaced.

4

Test the defrost thermostat

Locate the bimetal defrost thermostat clipped to the evaporator. It should show continuity when cold and no continuity when warm. If it shows continuity at room temperature, it is stuck closed.

A stuck-closed thermostat keeps the heater running indefinitely, which triggers the 80-minute timeout.

5

Replace faulty components

Replace the defrost heater and/or thermostat as needed. Reassemble the back panel and plug in the refrigerator.

It is good practice to replace both the heater and thermostat together, as they work as a system.

When to call a professional

If both the heater and thermostat test good, the defrost control board or main control board may be faulty and requires professional diagnosis.
