E1

KitchenAid Dryer Error Code E1 — Open Temperature Sensor

Moderate 20-40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

Error code E1 indicates the exhaust temperature sensor (thermistor) has an open circuit, meaning the sensor wire is broken or disconnected. The dryer relies on this sensor to monitor exhaust air temperature and regulate heat. Without a functioning sensor, the dryer cannot safely control temperature and will shut down all outputs.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Unplug the dryer

Disconnect the dryer from power before performing any repairs.

If it's a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply valve.

2

Locate the temperature sensor

Remove the lint screen and the screws inside the lint trap housing. Remove the top panel to access the exhaust temperature sensor, typically located near the blower housing.

Refer to your model's tech sheet for the exact sensor location.

3

Test the sensor with a multimeter

Disconnect the sensor wire harness and test resistance across the sensor terminals. At room temperature, a working thermistor typically reads around 10,000-12,000 ohms.

An OL (infinity) reading confirms an open circuit — the sensor needs replacement.

4

Replace the temperature sensor

Remove the mounting screw or clip holding the sensor, disconnect the wires, and install the new sensor. Reconnect the harness and reassemble.

Make sure the new sensor is the correct type for your model — NTC sensors decrease in resistance as temperature increases.

When to call a professional

If replacing the sensor does not clear the error, the control board temperature sensing circuit may be faulty. Professional diagnosis is recommended.
