F3 E2

Kenmore Washer Error Code F3 E2 — Water Temperature Sensor Failure

Moderate DIY Repair 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The F3 E2 error code on Kenmore washers indicates the water temperature sensor (thermistor) is either shorted or open — reading outside the expected resistance range. The sensor tells the control board the water temperature so it can manage hot and cold water valve operation. A failed sensor can cause the washer to fill with the wrong temperature water or not fill at all.

Alternate codes: F3E2

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Locate the temperature sensor

The water temperature sensor on most Kenmore front-load washers is located in the outer tub, near the heating element (if equipped) or near the water inlet. On top-load models, it is typically in the tub ring or the water inlet assembly.

Check your model's tech sheet (usually found inside the control panel or taped to the back) for the exact sensor location.

2

Test the temperature sensor

Unplug the washer. Disconnect the sensor connector. Measure resistance with a multimeter — at room temperature (72°F / 22°C), the sensor should read approximately 50,000 ohms (50K). A reading of 0 or infinite (OL) indicates failure.

If you have access to warm water, submerge the sensor tip and verify the resistance decreases as temperature rises.

3

Replace the temperature sensor

Remove the failed sensor from its mounting position. On front-loaders, it often pulls straight out of a rubber grommet. Install the new sensor in the same position and reconnect the wiring connector.

Apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant on the sensor grommet for a watertight seal during reinstallation.

When to call a professional

If the sensor reads within normal range but the code persists, the control board's sensor input circuit may be faulty.
