Kenmore Dryer Error Code F2 E3 — Exhaust Thermistor Open Circuit

Moderate DIY Repair 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The F2 E3 error code on Kenmore dryers indicates the exhaust thermistor — the sensor that monitors the temperature of air leaving the drum — has an open circuit. The dryer cannot verify the exhaust temperature, which may cause it to shut down as a safety measure. Causes include a broken thermistor, a loose wire connector, or a damaged wire.

Alternate codes: F2E3

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Locate the exhaust thermistor

The exhaust thermistor is located on the exhaust duct or blower housing at the rear of the dryer. It is a small cylindrical or disc-shaped sensor with two wires. Access it by removing the rear panel or lower front panel depending on the model.

Do not confuse the exhaust thermistor with the cycling thermostat or the high-limit thermostat — they are different components in different locations.

2

Test the thermistor

Unplug the dryer. Disconnect the thermistor wires and measure resistance. At room temperature, the thermistor should read approximately 10,000–50,000 ohms. An infinite (OL) reading confirms an open circuit.

Also check the wire connectors for corrosion or a pushed-back pin that could cause an intermittent open.

3

Replace the exhaust thermistor

Remove the mounting screw or clip holding the thermistor. Disconnect the old sensor and install the replacement in the same position. Reconnect the wires.

Thermistors are inexpensive parts — if in doubt, replace it rather than spending more time diagnosing.

When to call a professional

If the new thermistor still shows an open reading, the wiring between the thermistor and the control board may be broken internally.
