Jenn-Air Refrigerator Error Code FF — Freezer Temperature Warning

Moderate Repair 15–60 minutes (varies by cause) Tools: Standalone thermometer, Phillips screwdriver

What this means

Error FF on Jenn-Air refrigerators indicates the freezer compartment temperature has exceeded the safe threshold (typically above 26°F / -3°C) for an extended period. This is a food safety alert — frozen food may be thawing or already thawed. The code can be triggered by a power outage, a door left ajar, a failed evaporator fan, a defrost system problem, a failed compressor, or a sealed-system leak. Jenn-Air's premium models display this prominently on the LCD/touchscreen panel.

Alternate codes: Freezer Fault

Step-by-step fix

3 steps
1

Dismiss the alert and check obvious causes

Press any button to dismiss the FF alert. Check if the freezer door was left ajar — even a small gap lets warm air in. Check if there was a recent power outage (the PF code may also be present). Verify the temperature setting has not been changed accidentally.

Place a standalone thermometer in the freezer after dismissing the alert to independently verify the temperature is recovering.

2

Listen for the compressor and fans

With the door closed, listen at the back/bottom of the refrigerator for the compressor running (a steady hum). Open the freezer door slightly and listen for the evaporator fan. If either is silent, investigate further — a dead compressor or fan means the freezer cannot cool.

The evaporator fan typically stops when you open the door (by design). Use the door switch — press it manually to simulate a closed door and listen for the fan.

3

Check for frost on the evaporator

If the compressor and fan are running but the freezer is not cold, remove the rear panel inside the freezer to check the evaporator coils. A completely frosted-over evaporator indicates a defrost system failure. A bare evaporator with no frost at all may indicate a sealed-system leak (no refrigerant).

A thin, even layer of frost on the evaporator is normal. A thick block of ice or no frost at all are both problems.

When to call a professional

If the compressor is not running, the evaporator is bare (possible refrigerant leak), or you have already checked the defrost system and it is working, a sealed-system repair requires a licensed refrigeration technician.
