Hotpoint Washer Error Code E6 — Motor Tacho / Speed Sensor Fault

Moderate Fix 30–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Socket wrench set

What this means

The E6 error code on Hotpoint washers indicates the motor tachometer (speed sensor) is not sending a signal to the control board, or the signal is erratic. The tachometer is a small coil mounted on the back of the motor that generates a pulse as the motor spins, allowing the control board to regulate drum speed. A disconnected wire, a broken tachometer coil, or a loose magnet on the motor shaft can trigger this code.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the washer

Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Run a spin cycle. If the error clears, it was likely a momentary glitch. If it returns, proceed with inspection.

If the drum was overloaded before the error appeared, reduce the load and retry before investigating further.

2

Access the motor

Unplug the washer. Remove the rear panel to expose the motor at the bottom of the machine. Locate the tachometer — a small round component attached to the rear of the motor with two wires.

On some Hotpoint models, the motor is accessed from the front bottom panel. Check your model's service manual.

3

Check the tachometer coil and connections

Inspect the tachometer wiring for disconnections or damage. Then test the coil with a multimeter set to ohms. A healthy tachometer coil typically reads between 100 and 300 ohms. An open line (OL) means the coil is broken.

Also check that the magnet on the motor shaft is secure. A loose or missing magnet will prevent the tachometer from generating a signal.

4

Replace the tachometer or carbon brushes

If the tachometer coil is open, replace it. If the coil is fine but the motor itself does not turn, check the carbon brushes (if applicable). Worn brushes can prevent the motor from spinning, which also produces no tachometer signal.

When replacing carbon brushes, replace both even if only one looks worn. They wear unevenly but should always be changed as a pair.

When to call a professional

If the tachometer and brushes are both good but the error persists, the motor control module or main board may be at fault. A technician can diagnose the electronics.
