E5

Hotpoint Washer Error Code E5 — Water Temperature Sensor Fault

Moderate Repair 20–35 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Needle-nose pliers

What this means

The E5 error on Hotpoint washers indicates the NTC temperature sensor (thermistor) is reading outside its expected range. This can be caused by a failed thermistor, a loose wire connection to the sensor, or a short circuit in the wiring harness. The washer may default to cold water or refuse to start cycles that require heated water.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Reset the washer

Unplug the washer for 2 minutes, then plug it back in. A temporary sensor glitch can trigger a false E5 code.

If the error clears but returns during hot or warm cycles, the sensor is likely failing intermittently.

2

Locate the temperature sensor

Disconnect power. The thermistor is typically located at the bottom of the outer tub, inserted into a rubber grommet. Access it by removing the back or bottom panel of the washer.

On most Hotpoint/GE washers, the thermistor has two wires and looks like a small probe with a plastic connector.

3

Test the thermistor

Disconnect the thermistor wires and measure resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature (about 72°F/22°C), a good thermistor reads approximately 10,000–12,000 ohms. A reading of 0 or infinite ohms means it is faulty.

You can further verify by warming the probe with your hand — resistance should decrease as temperature rises.

4

Replace the thermistor

Pull the old thermistor from its grommet, install the new one, and reconnect the wiring. Run a warm cycle to verify the error has cleared.

Apply a thin coat of silicone sealant around the grommet to prevent leaks.

When to call a professional

If the thermistor tests within normal range but the error persists, the main control board or wiring harness may be at fault.
