Hotpoint Washer Error Code E3 — Drain Pump Timeout
What this means
The E3 error on Hotpoint washers means the drain pump has been running but the water level sensor still detects water in the tub after the maximum drain time. This is commonly caused by a clogged drain pump filter, a blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump motor, or a kinked hose behind the machine.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck the drain hose
Pull the washer away from the wall and inspect the drain hose for kinks or tight bends. Ensure the end is not pushed more than 8 inches into the standpipe. Check that the standpipe itself is not clogged.
The drain hose end should be 39–96 inches above the floor for proper siphon prevention.
Clean the drain pump filter
Locate the drain pump access panel at the lower front of the washer. Place towels and a shallow pan underneath. Slowly open the filter cap and let water drain. Remove any coins, buttons, hair clips, or debris.
Expect a lot of water — have extra towels ready and open the cap very slowly.
Inspect the drain pump impeller
With the filter removed, look inside the pump housing. Spin the impeller by hand — it should rotate freely. If it is jammed or the blades are broken, the pump needs replacement.
A pump that hums loudly but moves no water almost certainly has a broken impeller.
Replace the drain pump if needed
Disconnect power. Access the pump from the bottom or front of the washer. Disconnect hoses and the electrical connector, remove mounting screws, and install the new pump.
Use spring clamps rather than worm-gear clamps for the hose connections — they seal better.
When to call a professional
If the drain path is clear and the pump runs normally but the error persists, the pressure switch or control board may need professional diagnosis.
