Hotpoint Refrigerator Error Code dH — Defrost Heater Failure

Urgent — Ice Buildup Will Worsen 30–50 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, 1/4-inch nut driver

What this means

The dH error on Hotpoint refrigerators means the defrost heater did not activate or reach the expected temperature during the automatic defrost cycle. The defrost system melts frost from the evaporator coils. When it fails, ice builds up on the coils, blocking airflow and causing the refrigerator and freezer to warm. Common causes include a burned-out defrost heater, a failed defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or a defective defrost control board.

Alternate codes: DH

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check for excessive frost in the freezer

Open the freezer and look at the back wall panel. If you see thick ice or frost covering the vents, the defrost system has definitely failed and frost is blocking airflow.

A thin layer of frost is normal. Thick ice (1/4 inch or more) is a clear sign of defrost failure.

2

Test the defrost heater

Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the freezer back panel to expose the evaporator coils and defrost heater. Disconnect the heater wires and test for continuity. A good heater reads some resistance. An open reading means the heater element is burned out.

The defrost heater is the glass or aluminum tube running along the bottom of the evaporator coil assembly.

3

Test the defrost thermostat (bi-metal)

The bi-metal thermostat is attached to the evaporator tubing. At freezer temperature (below 15°F), it should be closed (continuity). If it is open at freezing temperatures, it has failed.

To test at room temperature, place the thermostat in a bag in the freezer for 10 minutes, then test. It should show continuity when cold.

4

Replace the faulty component

Replace the defrost heater or thermostat as needed. If both are fine, the defrost timer or electronic defrost control board is likely the culprit. Manually advance the defrost timer — if the heater does not activate, replace the timer or control board.

After replacing defrost components, manually defrost any existing ice buildup before reassembling. A hair dryer on low heat speeds this up.

When to call a professional

If the heater and thermostat both test fine, the electronic defrost control on the main board is likely failed. Board replacement requires professional diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis.
