Hotpoint Refrigerator Error Code CC — Condenser Fan Failure

Urgent — Compressor Overheating Risk 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Vacuum with brush attachment

What this means

The CC error on Hotpoint refrigerators indicates the condenser fan motor has failed or is obstructed. The condenser fan cools the compressor and condenser coils. Without it, the compressor will overheat and shut down on its thermal overload, causing the refrigerator to cycle erratically and warm up.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the condenser area

Unplug the refrigerator. Pull it away from the wall. Remove the rear lower access panel. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean dust, pet hair, and debris from the condenser coils and fan area.

Heavy dust buildup is the number one cause of condenser problems. Aim to clean this area every 6–12 months.

2

Check for obstructions around the fan

Inspect the condenser fan blades for debris, wire ties, or anything that might be preventing rotation. Try spinning the fan blade by hand — it should rotate freely.

Items can fall behind the fridge and get pulled into the fan area. Check for any foreign objects.

3

Test the fan motor

Disconnect the fan motor wires and test for continuity. A good motor will show some resistance (typically 40–100 ohms depending on model). No continuity means the motor winding is open and needs replacement.

Also check that the motor receives voltage — if it does but does not run, the motor is definitely failed.

4

Replace the condenser fan motor

Remove the fan mounting bracket, disconnect the old motor, and install the replacement. Transfer the fan blade if needed and reassemble the bracket. Replace the access panel.

Make sure the fan blade has the correct spacing from the motor mount — too close and it will hit the bracket.

When to call a professional

If the motor is fine but the fan still does not run, the main control board relay may be defective. This requires board-level diagnosis.
