Hotpoint Oven Error Code F3 — Oven Temperature Sensor Open Circuit
What this means
The F3 error on Hotpoint ovens indicates the resistance temperature detector (RTD) sensor probe has an open circuit — meaning the control board cannot read the oven temperature. This is usually caused by a broken sensor element, a disconnected sensor wire, or a damaged wire harness between the sensor and the control board. The oven will not heat until this is resolved.
Step-by-step fix
3 stepsTest the temperature sensor
Disconnect power at the breaker. Locate the oven temperature sensor — a thin metal probe entering the oven through the back wall. Disconnect its two wires and measure resistance. At room temperature, it should read approximately 1,080–1,100 ohms. An infinite (OL) reading means the sensor is open.
You can test at the sensor plug inside the oven or at the control board end — test both to isolate whether the sensor or wiring is faulty.
Inspect the wiring
If the sensor reads correctly at its connector but the control board sees open, trace the wiring from the sensor to the control board. Look for pinched, burned, or broken wires.
Wires routed near the oven vent can degrade from heat over time. Check this area carefully.
Replace the sensor if faulty
Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the sensor inside the oven. Pull the sensor probe through the back wall, disconnect the old wiring, and connect the replacement. Slide the new sensor into place and secure with the mounting screw.
Do not bend the sensor probe sharply — it contains a delicate element that can break.
When to call a professional
If both the sensor and wiring test fine, the EOC board sensor circuit may be faulty — professional diagnosis is recommended.
