E5

Hotpoint Dryer Error Code E5 — Exhaust Thermistor / Thermal Sensor Failure

Moderate Fix 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Dryer vent brush

What this means

The E5 error code on Hotpoint dryers means the exhaust thermistor is reporting a temperature that is either impossibly low or impossibly high. This sensor monitors the temperature of air leaving the drum to prevent overheating. A failed thermistor, a loose wire connection, or a severely clogged vent (causing extreme heat) can trigger this code.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Clean the exhaust vent system

Disconnect the dryer from the exhaust vent duct at the back. Use a dryer vent brush to clean out lint buildup from the duct and the external vent hood. A severely clogged vent causes extreme heat that can damage the thermistor and trigger this error.

Dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year. Long vent runs with multiple turns need more frequent cleaning.

2

Clean the lint filter and housing

Remove the lint filter and wash it with warm soapy water to remove fabric softener residue that blocks airflow. Also vacuum the lint filter housing slot with a narrow attachment to remove trapped lint.

If water does not pass easily through your lint filter when held under a faucet, fabric softener residue has clogged the mesh.

3

Test the exhaust thermistor

Unplug the dryer. Access the exhaust area (usually at the back or bottom near the blower). Locate the exhaust thermistor and disconnect its wires. Test resistance with a multimeter. At room temperature, it should read approximately 10,000 to 12,000 ohms. An open line or 0 ohms indicates failure.

If the thermistor reading is normal at room temperature, warm it gently with a hair dryer — the resistance should decrease smoothly.

4

Replace the exhaust thermistor

If the thermistor tests out of range, replace it. Remove the mounting screw, disconnect the wires, install the new sensor, and reconnect. Run a timed dry cycle to verify the error is cleared.

After replacing the sensor, also verify your vent is clean. A failed sensor was likely damaged by excessive heat from poor venting.

When to call a professional

If both the thermistor and the vent system check out fine but the error persists, the main control board may have a faulty sensor input circuit. A technician can diagnose the electronics.
