Hotpoint Dryer Error Code E4 — Drum Not Turning / Motor Stall
What this means
The E4 error code on Hotpoint dryers means the control board detected that the drum motor is not turning the drum within the expected time after starting a cycle. This can be caused by a broken drive belt, a seized drum bearing, a jammed idler pulley, a motor failure, or an overloaded dryer. A broken belt is the most common cause.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck if the drum turns by hand
Open the dryer door and try to turn the drum by hand. It should rotate smoothly with some resistance from the belt. If it spins freely with no resistance, the drive belt is likely broken. If it does not turn at all, a bearing or pulley may be seized.
A drum that spins too freely (no tension) almost always indicates a snapped belt.
Inspect the drive belt
Unplug the dryer. Remove the top panel and front panel to access the drum and belt. Check the belt for breaks, fraying, or excessive slack. The belt wraps around the drum, under the idler pulley, and around the motor pulley.
Hotpoint dryers typically use a thin, flat ribbed belt. Note the routing path before removing the old belt so you can install the new one correctly.
Check the idler pulley and drum rollers
With the panels open, spin the idler pulley by hand. It should turn smoothly and quietly. Also spin the drum support rollers — they should roll freely without wobbling or squeaking. Replace any that are stiff, worn flat, or noisy.
Replace drum support rollers as a set (both sides) to ensure even drum support.
Test the drive motor
If the belt, pulleys, and rollers are all fine, the motor itself may be seized or burned out. Disconnect the motor wires and test for continuity with a multimeter. Replace the motor if it shows an open circuit.
A motor that hums but does not turn likely has a failed start winding or seized bearings.
When to call a professional
If the motor needs replacement, it requires significant disassembly. A technician can complete this efficiently and ensure proper belt routing during reassembly.
