Hotpoint Dishwasher Error Code C7 — Water Temperature Too Low

Moderate Repair 25–45 minutes Tools: Multimeter, Phillips screwdriver, Nut driver set

What this means

The C7 error on Hotpoint dishwashers indicates the water temperature has not risen enough during the wash cycle. The dishwasher requires water to reach approximately 120°F for proper cleaning. This can be caused by a faulty heating element, a tripped thermal fuse, low incoming water temperature from the home water heater, or a failed thermistor.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Run hot water before starting the dishwasher

Run the kitchen faucet until the water is hot before starting the dishwasher. This ensures the first fill is hot. Check your water heater setting — it should be at least 120°F.

If you have a long pipe run from your water heater to the kitchen, it can take a while for hot water to arrive.

2

Test the heating element

Disconnect power. Access the heating element under the bottom of the tub. Disconnect the wire terminals and test for continuity. A good element reads 10–30 ohms. Also test for ground fault by touching one probe to a terminal and the other to the metal tub — it should read open (infinite).

Visually inspect the element for cracks, blisters, or burn marks — any visible damage means it needs replacing.

3

Check the thermal fuse

Some Hotpoint dishwashers have a thermal fuse on the heating element circuit. Test it for continuity — a blown fuse reads open.

A blown thermal fuse usually indicates the heating element previously overheated. Replace both the fuse and inspect the element.

4

Replace the heating element if faulty

Remove the retaining nut(s) from underneath the tub. Push the element mounting brackets inward and lift the element out from inside the tub. Install the new element and reconnect the wiring.

Apply a drop of thread sealant to the nut threads to prevent future leaks around the element fittings.

When to call a professional

If the heating element and thermal fuse test fine, the control board may not be sending power to the heater circuit — this requires professional electrical diagnosis.
