Hotpoint Dishwasher Error Code C4 — Overfill / Flood Detected
What this means
The C4 error on Hotpoint dishwashers indicates the water level in the tub has exceeded the maximum safe level. The control board activates the drain pump to remove excess water. Common causes include a stuck-open water inlet valve, a faulty float switch, or a clogged float mechanism that cannot rise to signal the tub is full.

Step-by-step fix
4 stepsTurn off the water supply
Immediately close the hot water supply valve under the kitchen sink that feeds the dishwasher. This stops additional water from entering.
If water is actively overflowing, also turn off the circuit breaker to stop the dishwasher completely.
Check the float switch
Open the dishwasher door. Locate the float assembly at the bottom of the tub (usually front-left corner). Lift the float dome up and down — it should move freely. If stuck, remove it and clear any debris underneath.
Food particles, broken glass, and utensils that fell off the rack can jam the float.
Test the water inlet valve
Turn off the water supply and disconnect power. With the supply off, check if water continues to drip into the tub. A dripping valve is stuck open and must be replaced. Also test the solenoid for continuity.
Hard water mineral deposits can prevent the valve from closing fully.
Replace the faulty component
Replace the inlet valve if it is leaking, or the float switch if it is stuck or fails the continuity test. Reconnect everything and run a short cycle to verify.
After fixing, mop up any water that entered the base pan and ensure the flood switch can move freely.
When to call a professional
If the inlet valve and float switch are fine but the dishwasher continues to overfill, the control board may be sending continuous fill commands.
