FD

Haier Refrigerator Error Code FD — Freezer Defrost Error

Major Repair 30–60 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter, Hair dryer, Nut driver (1/4-inch)

What this means

Error code FD on Haier refrigerators indicates the freezer defrost system is not functioning properly. The control board has detected that the defrost cycle did not complete successfully — either the defrost heater did not activate, the defrost timer/board did not initiate the cycle, or the defrost thermostat prevented the heater from turning on. Heavy frost on the evaporator coils will restrict airflow, causing poor cooling in both the freezer and refrigerator compartments.

Alternate codes: Fd

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Manually defrost the freezer

Unplug the refrigerator, remove all food from the freezer, and open the door. Allow the ice to melt naturally (4–8 hours) or carefully use a hair dryer on low heat to speed the process. Place towels inside to catch water.

Never use a knife or sharp tool to chip ice — you risk puncturing the evaporator coils and causing an irreparable refrigerant leak.

2

Test the defrost heater

With the evaporator panel removed and ice cleared, locate the defrost heater (a glass tube or calrod element beneath the coils). Disconnect it and test with a multimeter for continuity. A good heater reads 20–60 ohms. OL means it is burned out.

The defrost heater may be behind or beneath the evaporator coils — you may need to carefully move aside refrigerant lines to access it.

3

Test the defrost thermostat (bi-metal)

The defrost thermostat is a small disc mounted on the evaporator tubing. Test it at room temperature — it should be closed (showing continuity near 0 ohms). If it reads OL at room temperature, it is stuck open and preventing the heater from turning on.

The thermostat opens at around 50°F and closes when cold — so at room temperature it should always show continuity.

4

Check the defrost timer or adaptive board

Older Haier models use a mechanical defrost timer; newer models use an adaptive defrost board. If the heater and thermostat both test good, the timer may be stuck. Manually advance a mechanical timer and listen for a click and the heater to activate.

Adaptive defrost boards rarely fail, but when they do, there are no user-serviceable diagnostics — replacement is the only fix.

When to call a professional

Defrost system repairs involve working near sealed refrigerant lines. If you are not comfortable or if the adaptive defrost board is suspected, have a certified technician handle the repair.
