GE Washer Error Code E52 — Motor Fault
What this means
The E52 error code on GE washers indicates a drive motor fault. The motor is not operating correctly — it may be drawing excessive current, has failed to start, or has an internal winding fault. The washer will not spin or agitate. This can also be caused by a jammed drum, worn motor brushes, or a faulty motor control board.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsCheck for a jammed drum
Unplug the washer. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it won't turn or is very stiff, something may be jammed between the drum and tub (a coin, button, or piece of clothing).
Remove the item causing the jam before testing the motor.
Reset the washer
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. If the E52 was caused by a temporary overload (too-heavy load), it may clear after a reset.
Test the motor
Access the motor at the bottom of the washer. Disconnect the motor wires and test windings with a multimeter. Check for shorts to ground.
A motor that hums but doesn't spin may have worn carbon brushes.
Replace the motor if faulty
If the motor windings test shorted or open, replace the drive motor. Disconnect the belt (if applicable), remove mounting bolts, swap in the new motor, and test.
When to call a professional
Motor replacement can be physically demanding and involves heavy components. If you're not experienced with appliance motor work, call a professional.
