E55

Frigidaire Washer Error Code E55 — Motor Overheating

Moderate Repair 20–45 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Socket wrench set

What this means

The E55 error on Frigidaire washers indicates the drive motor temperature has exceeded safe operating limits. The washer shuts down to prevent motor damage. This is commonly caused by overloading the drum, a mechanical obstruction preventing the drum from spinning freely, or worn motor brushes that cause excessive heat generation. Repeated E55 errors without overloading may indicate the motor is failing.

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Let the motor cool down

Turn off the washer and wait at least 30 minutes for the motor to cool. Do not attempt to restart immediately — the thermal protection needs time to reset.

Open the door to help air circulate around the drum and motor area.

2

Reduce the load

Remove about half the items from the drum. Overloading is the most common cause of motor overheating. Restart the cycle with the reduced load.

A front-load washer should be filled loosely — you should be able to fit your hand between the clothes and the top of the drum.

3

Check for mechanical obstructions

With the washer empty and unplugged, try spinning the drum by hand. It should rotate smoothly with minimal resistance. If it's stiff or won't turn, something may be jammed between the drum and tub (like a garment caught in the seal).

Pull back the door boot seal and check for small items like socks or undergarments trapped between the seal and drum.

4

Inspect motor brushes (if applicable)

If your Frigidaire washer uses a brushed motor, worn motor brushes can cause overheating. Access the motor from the back panel, remove the brush holders, and check the carbon brush length. Brushes shorter than 1/4 inch need replacement.

Motor brushes are inexpensive and come in pairs — always replace both at the same time.

When to call a professional

If the motor overheats with normal loads and no obstructions, the motor itself may be failing. Motor replacement is a complex job best handled by a professional.
