Frigidaire Refrigerator Error Code HI — High Temperature Warning

Moderate Fix 15–60 minutes Tools: Vacuum with brush attachment, Food thermometer, Condenser coil brush

What this means

The HI error code on Frigidaire refrigerators is a temperature alarm indicating one or both compartments have risen above the safe threshold (above 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the refrigerator or above 26 degrees Fahrenheit for the freezer). This can happen after a power outage, if the door was left open, if the compressor has failed, or if the condenser coils are extremely dirty. It may also appear after first installation or after loading a large amount of warm food.

Alternate codes: H1, H

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Check the obvious causes first

Was there a recent power outage? Was the door left ajar? Did you load a large quantity of warm food? If any of these apply, close the door and allow 4 to 6 hours for the temperature to stabilize. The HI alarm should clear on its own.

Press the alarm reset button (if available) to silence the beeping while the refrigerator recovers.

2

Verify the compressor is running

Listen at the back of the refrigerator. You should hear a low hum from the compressor. Feel the compressor — it should be warm. If it is silent and cold, the compressor is not running.

If the compressor tries to start (clicks on and off every few minutes), the start relay or compressor itself may be failing.

3

Clean the condenser coils

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the condenser coils (bottom behind the kick plate or at the rear). Use a condenser coil brush and vacuum to remove dust and pet hair. Dirty coils cannot dissipate heat effectively, causing the refrigerator to warm up.

Condenser coils should be cleaned every 6 to 12 months. Homes with pets need more frequent cleaning.

4

Check the evaporator fan and condenser fan

Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan (it should run when the door is closed). Also check the condenser fan (near the compressor at the rear). If either fan is not running, the refrigerator cannot cool properly. Test each fan motor for continuity.

Ice buildup on the evaporator fan can stop it from spinning. Manual defrost may be needed.

When to call a professional

If the compressor is not running or is cycling on and off rapidly, the compressor, start relay, or compressor inverter may need replacement. These are advanced repairs requiring refrigerant handling certification.
