Frigidaire Dryer Error Code E63 — Heating Element Short to Ground
What this means
Error code E63 indicates the control board detected a ground fault (short circuit) at the heating element. Current is leaking to the metal housing of the dryer, which is a potential safety hazard. The heater or its wiring must be repaired before the dryer can operate.
Step-by-step fix
4 stepsUnplug and access the heater
Disconnect power. Remove the back panel of the dryer to access the heating element assembly.
Electric dryers use 240V — never work on them with power connected.
Test for ground fault
Disconnect one wire from the heating element. Set your multimeter to resistance and test between each heater terminal and the metal housing. Any reading other than OL (open) indicates a short.
Even a reading of several thousand ohms to ground is a problem — it should be completely open.
Inspect the heating element
Visually examine the heating element coils inside the housing. Look for coils that have sagged and are touching the metal housing.
A broken coil that has fallen and is resting against the housing is the most common cause of this code.
Replace the heating element
Remove the old element assembly and install the new one. Reconnect wiring and reassemble the dryer.
Take note of the wire positions before disconnecting — the high-limit thermostat wires are nearby.
When to call a professional
If the heating element tests fine but the error persists, there may be a wiring fault inside the dryer cabinet requiring professional tracing.
