Frigidaire Dryer Error Code E22 — Outlet Thermistor Shorted

Moderate Fix 20–40 minutes Tools: Phillips screwdriver, Multimeter

What this means

The E22 error code on Frigidaire dryers means the outlet thermistor (exhaust temperature sensor) is shorted. The dryer uses this sensor to monitor the temperature of air leaving the drum. A shorted sensor sends a false low-temperature signal, which can cause the dryer to overheat or refuse to start as a safety precaution. The sensor, its wiring, or the connector may be at fault.

Alternate codes: E 22

Step-by-step fix

4 steps
1

Test the outlet thermistor

Unplug the dryer. Access the exhaust area (usually at the back near the blower housing). Locate the outlet thermistor and disconnect its wires. Test resistance: at room temperature, it should read approximately 10,000 to 12,000 ohms. A reading near 0 ohms confirms a short.

Compare your reading to the spec in the service manual. Different models may have different thermistor values.

2

Inspect the thermistor wiring

Check the wires from the thermistor to the control board for bare spots, melted insulation, or areas where two wires touch. Damaged wiring can create a short that mimics a failed sensor.

Wires near the exhaust path are exposed to heat and are more likely to have degraded insulation.

3

Clean the exhaust vent

A severely clogged vent causes extreme temperatures that can damage the thermistor. Clean the lint filter, the vent hose, and the external vent hood even if they do not appear clogged.

Excessive heat is often the root cause of thermistor failure. Cleaning the vent prevents recurrence.

4

Replace the outlet thermistor

If the thermistor reads near 0 ohms, replace it. Remove the mounting screw, disconnect the wires, install the new sensor, and test with a timed dry cycle.

After replacing the thermistor, run the dryer and check that the exhaust air feels warm but not excessively hot.

When to call a professional

If the sensor and wiring are fine but the error persists, the control board's thermistor input may be shorted. A technician can test the board.
